MUMBAI, JULY 23: Bank of India (BoI) and Central Railway (CR) scored easy victories on their opponents today in the Gulf Oil WIFA Super Division league at the Cooperage.
BoI got past Fr Agnel 3-0 while Hamid Ansari scored the winner for CR against Central Bank.
Playing their first match of the season BoI, Shankar Thakur put his team ahead early in the 13th minute with a neat placement off a Chandrakant Poojary through pass. Thakur playing a withdrawn striker outpaced Rawlin D’Souza Fr Agnel defender and placed the ball to the right of Rupesh Kamat. Five minutes later, attacking medio Anton Saldhana increased the lead with an opportunistic goal. Striker Satish ME sent a high cross from the left to find Poojary. The latter headed the ball towards the goal but Saldhana tapped it and it went through the hands off Agnel ‘keeper. At half-time, BoI were leading 2-0.
The Fr Agnel defence was unable to stop the raids from the BoI strikers and mid-fielders. Substitute Bashir Hussian added the third to thetally.
Fr Agnel playing their third match failed to capitalise on chances fell their way. The link between defence and strikers was missing as mid-field were at loss of ideas.
In the first match of the day, Central Railway notched up first win of the league. They lost 0-3 to Rashtryia Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) in the opener.
After a barren first-half, medio Hamid Ansari deflected Asif Jamal’s shot to score the solitary goal of the match. On medio Shanta Kumar’s flag-kick from left flank, Jamal positioned himself to find the far post. And he chipped the ball to the left of Jonas D’Souza. But the ball was going away from the goal. Hamid Ansari found the net with a half volley.
Central Bank had couple of opportunities but luck did not favoured them. On first occasion, Jamil Ansari crossed from the right while striker Melwyn Vaz missed the header and Caitano Fernandes could only manage to find the bar.
Coach gets it back with interest
Cooperage was witness to an unusual brawl on Friday. Acoach got into a fist fight with a player in a piece of action far more interesting than the mundane football that the gathered few are subjected to.
The `contest’ took place while a Western India Football Association’s Super Division soccer match between Fr Agnel and Bank of India was in progress. Fr Agnel coach Jerome Dias brought in Charlie Luis for medio Prasenjit Sutradhar after the first 10 minutes of the match. Just after the referee Saby D’Costa blew the whistle for half-time, Dias got up along with other bench players and started walking towards the dressing room.
Suddenly, he turned back and slapped Sutradhar. The player retaliated with a kick on coach’s back. The drama was brought to an end when other substitute players intervened and took Sutradhar away. The player was allegedly questioning his coach’s decision to substitute him while Dias was too busy worrying to answer. Fr Agnel lost 0-3.
