For over three days, a 50-year-old mentally disturbed woman, and a baby, watched over the body of her 75-year-old mother, N. Kaur Chaddha, who died in their house at Sher-e-Punjab colony in Andheri.

The incident came to light on Saturday after residents of Calsbury Co-operative Housing Society complained of a strong odour from the Chaddhas first-floor flat. The residents, who noticed the Chaddhas had not opened their door for days, decided to check.

A watchman discovered the body and saw the old woman on the floor and the daughter walking around the house aimlessly.

After attempts at making the daughter open the door failed, residents informed the police. When the door was forced open, the police found the highly decomposed body of the old woman, sent it for an autopsy, and admitted the daughter to Cooper Hospital.

The building’s secretary, Marion Vaz, said: ‘‘Though we know them for the last 14 years, we do not know the daughter’s real name. No one visits them, they never go out.’’ Some residents say when the Chaddhas came there, they were well off, but add the financial situation worsened and the old woman would ask for money. Others say things got so bad that for the last few months, the family would burn newspapers to make tea.
