GUWAHATI, Aug 12: Bodo militants killed 13, executing six after tying them to a tree, as extremist violence escalated in Assam since last night, police said.

Suspected National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militants dragged six men out of their homes at Lahapara village of Kamrup district, tied them to a tree and fired at them from a close range killing them on the spot. The militants then went to the nearby Hatimura village and killed four persons whose bodies were recovered today.

One jeweller, Sankar Debnath, was shot dead by suspected Bodo militants at Domdoma village of Nalbari district today.

In another incident in the same district, NDFB militants killed two persons on August 10.

Assam Chief Minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, announced an ex-gratia grant of Rs one lakh each to the next of kin of the victims.

The killings come close on the heel of yesterday’s attempt by suspected United Liberation Front of Assam militants to blow up the Delhi-Guwahati Rajdhani Express. Police said the bomb, said to be a remote controlled device, must have been planted under the tracks between 7:10 am and 7:30 am, as the last patrolling party consisting of police and railway officials had checked that portion of the track at 6:30 am. Two trains had passed by after that, the last one being a Delhi-bound train at 7:10 am. A massive manhunt is on.
