Despite the ongoing negotiations on the Indo-US nuclear deal, National Security Adviser M K Narayanan today met chairman of the International Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission Hans Blix to continue engaging in disarmament talks.
Blix, in the capital on an invite from the New Delhi-based India International Centre to deliver a talk, had a detailed discussion with Narayanan on the issues arising out of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) that has been discussed in a report Weapons of Terror.
Blix had, previously, criticised the Indo-US nuclear deal, saying it could fuel an arms race in Asia. Speaking at the India International Centre (IIC), he avoided repeating his stance and instead made a case for supporting the draft of the fissile material cut-off treaty which the US has submitted at the Conference on Disarmament at Geneva. He described it as a treaty that ought to have a “domino effect” in other countries.
He also came out in support of initiatives launched by the UN in defusing crises arising out of weapons of mass destruction and a nuclear fuel lease system that would enable fuel suppliers to supply to consumers (like Iran).
