The situation at Kandela, the Kisan Kurukshetra, further aggravated today with the Bharti Kisan Union (BKU) serving a 24-hour ultimatum on the Haryana government for releasing all arrested union workers.

The ultimatum came as the protest dharna in the village school continued for the fifth day. Two DSPs and four others are still in captivity of the BKU activists who are demanding the release of their arrested colleagues in lieu of the hostages.

HC notice to Ghasi Ram

CHANDIGARH: A Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, comprising Justice N.K. Sodhi and Justice M.M. Kumar, has issued notice to Ghasi Ram Nain, state president of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) and other leaders on a public interest litigation filed by Bhale Ram, a resident of Jind. The petitioner sought the court to restraint the BKU leaders from creating hindrances on the roads by erecting obstructions, causing damage to public property and government buses and keeping government officials hostage. BKU Rohtak unit president Dharambir Hooda said the Chautala government should release the union leaders at the earliest and also waive the outstanding power bills as had been promised earlier. The hostages were safe in their custody, he added.

State president of BKU Ghasi Ram Nain led the protesting farmers in staging an indefinite sit-in in the village and blockade of the Jind-Kaithal road forcing the Haryana Roadways authorities to divert buses via Safidon and other routes.

Nain said they would continue to hold DSP Jagdish Nagar, his wife Rajwanti Devi, gunman Amrik Singh, driver of a private vehicle in which he was going to Jind from Chandigarh, DSP Ashok Kumar and Head Constable Ram Mehar until the BKU leaders were released.

The situation would be reviewed tomorrow.
