MUMBAI, APRIL 10: Minister of State for Transport Gangadhar Gade on Monday told the Legislative Assembly that some volunteers of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (youth wing of the BJP) had poured petrol over a lady passenger, travelling by an ST bus, at Beed on February 10 and set her on fire.
Replying to a calling attention motion moved by Subhash Kul and others, the minister said that the local unit of the BJYM had organised a raasta roko agitation on the day and had resorted to stone pelting on buses.
Volunteers of the BJYM stopped a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus (MH 12 R 1760) of the Solapur depot proceeding from Aurangabad to Pandharpur with 61 passengers, pelted stones and set it on fire, he said. Six passengers were injured and a lady succumbed to her burns on February 25 as a result, he added.
He said that five accused had absconded after the incident and the police were on the lookout for them. He said that five seats of the bus had been reduced to ashes.
Opposition members Jaiprakash Mundada, Prabhakar More and others interrupted the minister’s speech demanding that what he was saying in the House was not included in his written statement.
Answering a supplementary, Minister for Transport Shivajirao Moghe announced that the government would pay a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the family of the lady.
