The spotlight is back on Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi’s tribal identity or rather the lack of it, with Assembly Deputy Speaker and Korba BJP MLA, Banwari Lal Aggarwal, filing a PIL before the High Court seeking a CBI probe into the matter.

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes’ (NCSCST) had in a directive in October 2001 asked the state government to verify the genuineness of Jogi’s ST certificate. Jogi later succeeded in obtaining a HC stay on the order. The case is listed for this month end.

Confirming the PIL, Aggarwal said his key argument hinges on the NCSCST’s directive to the state government.

The Commission, he said, had lost sight of the fact that a fair inquiry against the CM cannot be conducted by any state official. ‘‘Can any government servant conduct such an inquiry impartially?’’ he asked.

He, however, refused to elaborate on the additional facts he had acquired in support of his PIL. ‘‘Let the PIL come up for hearing, people will come to know,’’ he said.
