After Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, it’s Chhattisgarh that’s brining good news for the BJP. The ruling party today swept the first-ever civic polls in the state, winning six of eight mayoral posts.
The Congress, which had earlier been routed in the Lok Sabha polls, faced major reversals in the civic polls, losing some of its strongest bastions in the three-tier local urban bodies.
CM Raman Singh, addressing a press conference this evening, termed the victory a ‘‘referendum on the government’s one-year performance’’. He said, ‘‘It’s a positive mandate, a clear vindication of our policies.”
Singh said ‘‘better coordination between the government and the organization (BJP) has paid dividends. We are set to sweep the upcoming panchayat elections slated for next month.’’ He expressed satisfaction over the results in the Rajnandgaon and Kawardha districts —— previously his parliamentary constituency and home district respectively. Here the Congress could not open its account.
