AHMEDABAD, July 28: Even as half of the city continued to live under a pall of fear, political parties were blaming each other for the violence in the city. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State unit president Rajendrasinh Rana today alleged that there was a possibility of a Congress hand in the communal riots. He also alleged that Pakistan’s Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) was backing anti-national elements to perpetrate violence.

In the aftermath of Kargil conflict and Indian armed forces’ victory, a surge of nationalistic feeling had come about, he said. And the Congress began to feel that it was losing support of the people, Rana alleged. He also accused the Congress of trying to derive political mileage out of the situation.

About Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela’s statement that his name was being linked with the disturbances to have him arrested, Rana said Vaghela might have said this because of guilty conscience. He, however, denied there was any move to have Vaghela arrested.

Rana further said that the BJP believes in settling political scores in the battlefield of elections and “not by other means”. He said that national interest was supreme to the BJP and it would not do anything to harm the society or the nation. BJP State unit general secretary Gordhan Zadaphia said that the pattern of the incidents during the violence suggested that riots were instigated. He said Congress allegations against the BJP show that “they are trying to defend themselves”. Both denied allegations that the State Government had failed to contain violence in time.
