Determined to play the role of a belligerent opposition and raise ‘‘ideologically-oriented’’ issues, the BJP today sought to use a calling attention motion on rising atrocities against women in Delhi and other parts of the country to attack the Congress for its alleged support to ‘‘fatwa’’ politics. BJP leader V.K. Malhotra’s sharp attack against Congress chief Sonia Gandhi over her ‘‘silence’’ on the Imrana issue created a furore in the House, leading the Speaker to expunge certain remarks from the record.

Minister of State for Home Shriprakash Jaiswal also dismissed as needless ‘‘politicisation’’ Malhotra’s demand for the resignation of the Union Home Minister over the spurt in rape cases in Delhi. Pointing to the number of crimes against women in Delhi in the six years of NDA rule, Jaiswal said: ‘‘Did they ask for the Home Minister’s resignation then?’’ He added that the Delhi Police had put in place a series of steps to check crime against women.

Raising the calling attention motion, Malhotra said the rapes in the Capital had heightened the sense of insecurity among women which the government had failed to address.
