PUNE, Aug 25: Its official now! Bharatiya Janata Party BJP is involved in the highest number of cases pertaining to the violation of model code of conduct for the ensuing State Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in the district.

A total of 61 cases pertaining to violation of the model code of conduct were reported from various parts of the district till this evening. BJP8217;s involvement was suspected in 25 of these 61 cases, according to a report forwarded to the Election Commission EC by the officials at the district collectorate today.

According to the report, Republican Party of India RPI is suspected to be involved in 10 cases of poll code violation, Congress in eight cases, Shiv Sena in five cases, Nationalist Congress Party in three cases and Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena and Patit Pavan Sanghatana in one case each.

The report said independent candidates and others were involved in five incidents of violation of the code of conduct while the identities of the people involved in four cases could not be ascertained.

The largest number of 24 cases were relating to defacement of public property. A total of 13 cases were lodged as per the provisions made under various sections of the Bombay Police Act and 19 as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, the report said.

People involved in two cases were slapped with various charges punishable as per the provisions of the Indian Penal Code. There were two incidents of violation of various provisions made under the People8217;s Representation Act and a case of cruelty of animal, according to the report.

Workers of Shiv Sena allegedly installed loud speakers atop two jeeps and holding a public meeting at Davadi village in Khed taluka without obtaining any prior permission from the police yesterday. Sub Divisional Magistrate SDM for Khed Sub Division Suhas Diwate has filed a case with the Khed police in this connection.

In a bid to ensure free and fair polls, the police had seized a total of 73 unlicensed weapons and 219 cartridges till this evening. Owners of 689 licensed arms have deposited their weapons with the police and a total of 4,487 miscreants have been detained as precautionary measures, the report said.
