The BJP said here today that Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf’s reaction to the J-K elections betrayed his ‘‘nervousness’’ over the democratic process underway in the state.
BJP spokesman Sunil Shastri said: ‘‘Musharraf’s description of the elections as farcical in his address to the nation on Pakistan’s Independence day is a challenge to the civilised world, which is fighting the menace of global terrorism. His nervousness over the democratic process in J-K is obvious.’’
He took an exception to Musharraf’s description of terrorism as a ‘‘freedom struggle’’ and said the BJP strongly objected to it. ‘‘The people of J-K,’’ according to him, ‘‘would express their faith in the Indian sovereignty and democratic traditions through the ballot.’’ The elections in India were conducted by the Election Commission and were ‘‘most transparent, free and fair.’’
Musharraf would do well to focus on elections in his own country rather than being concerned about the Assembly polls in J-K. It was Musharraf who had made a mockery of elections when he held a referendum to legitimise his regime, Shastri said.
