PONDICHERRY MARCH 21: The BJP on Tuesday demanded imposition of President’s rule in the Union Territory.

The BJP’s Pondicherry unit president, A M Krishnamoorthy, in a memorandum to Lt Governor Rajni Rai, said the territory would face political uncertainty and instability if a Congress-TMC ministry, headed by P Shanmugham, who was not an MLA, was sworn in.

He said the provisions of the Union Territories Act should be thoroughly examined to determine whether a person who was not a member of the assembly could become Chief Minister.

Shanmugham would be under ‘pressure’ as he had to get himself elected within six months. Besides, implementation of welfare schemes would suffer a setback as the duration of his ministry would be only for an year in view of the general elections due in 2001, he said.
