JAMNAGAR, Jan 17: In a bid to exonerate itself, the State BJP executive today accused the National Commission for Minorities of adopting partisan approach and politically favouring the Congress by leaking its report even before the expiry of deadline it had set for the State Government to file details on the attacks on churches in the tribal-dominated Dangs district.

In a political resolution adopted unanimously after three amendments on the second and concluding day of the executive meeting, the party lashed out at the Congress for indirectly supporting conversion by rejecting Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s suggestion for a national debate on the issue. It also criticised the Congress president for listening to the representations made by Christian Adivasis only.

The resolution, moved by the party general secretary Vijay Rupani and supported by chief whip in the State Assembly Bharat Barot, praised the Keshubhai Patel ministry for taking effective and timely steps to enforce law and order in the trouble-torn district.

Moving the resolution, Rupani flayed the NCM which had drafted a team with judicial power to the State, and alleged that the NCM, appointed by the previous Congress regime, had not acted politically and rendered itself a political committee. The executive expresses regrets over the conduct of the commission, he noted.

The resolution said the Congress had become a desperate force after losing the Bharuch Lok Sabha by-election and by aligning with the forces which had instigated vandalism it had also concurred with them. The BJP executive strongly condemned the Congress for its nefarious role and its president Sonia Gandhi for rubbing salt on the wounds of “culture-loving Hindu Adivasis”, the resolution said. (Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel later told reporters that the Dangs issue was not discussed with party president Kushabhau Thakre who left Jamnagar after attending the party executive meeting).

The meeting also listed the government achievements like group insurance meetings, reservation for Baxi Panch people for education, implementation of the Dilip Singh Bhuria committee report and issuing charters of citizens’ rights.

The meeting pointed out that the government had granted 27 per cent reservation to the Baxi Panch members in education against 10 per cent earlier. The government also announced a special grant of Rs 5 lakh for development activities in 97 talukas as against 71 earlier, it said.

Referring to the Bhuria panel recommendations, the meeting said the government had made a provision of 17 per cent budgetary allocation for Adivasis’ welfare. On the Prime Minister’s 75th birthday, the government sanctioned Rs 1 lakh grant each to 75,000 unemployed, while plans were announced for development of cities and towns through the municipal corporations. The meeting also listed the success on the crime front and the efforts to provide financial support to industries.

Earlier, addressing the meeting, BJP national president Kushabhau Thakre asked the government to perform and solve the problems of people. “The Vajpayee Government can find excuses, the Kalyan Singh Ministry in Uttar Pradesh could show some pretexts, but not the Gujarat Government because the party is in power in most of the democratic institutions right from taluka panchayts”, he said.

Reminding the organisational leaders and ministers that the people had installed them in power because they found the previous regimes failing in meeting their needs and solving problems, Thakre stressed on a better co-ordination between the organisational wing and the government. He also advised the leaders not to harbour any inferiority complex. `Your work is no less important than ministers”, he told them.

Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel highlighting his government’s achievements and sought support of party workers in bringing to notice people’s problems and apprising the masses about various projects.

The meeting also took stock of organisational base at different places and reviewed the political atmosphere.

On the state of the organisation, State BJP president Rajendrasinh Rana told reporters latter that the executive had heard the viewpoints of district leaders. We are now concentrating on strengthening and expanding our base. We want to mould our workers into party philosophy, he said.

To a question, he admitted that different frontal organisations were yet to develop systematic co-ordination. State leaders of different wings meet occasionally, but we have yet to chalk out a mechanism, he added.
