Hectic negotiations between the Birlas and RS Lodha have already begun in Kolkata, according to Birla Group sources. The Birla clan — led by K.K. Birla, S.K. Birla, C.K. Birla and Yashovardhan Birla — are camping in Kolkata to settle the matter amicably.
Yashovardhan Birla — a grand-nephew of late M P Birla — is said to be negotiating with the Lodhas to chalk out a compromise formula. When contacted in Kolkata, his wife Avantika Birla refused to comment, saying meetings are currently on. ‘‘I have no comments to make… you have to speak to any male member of the family,’’ she said.
It was widely expected that Nandini Nopany, daughter of K.K. Birla, would get a part of M P Birla’s business assets. Nandini controls Upper Ganges Sugar and all other sugar companies of the Rs 3,000 crore K.K. Birla group. Yashovardhan Birla was also mentioned as a possible recipient of M.P. Birla’s estate.
Kumar Mangalam Birla, son of late Aditya Vikram Birla and grand-nephew of M.P. Birla, is keeping away from the entire drama. ‘‘We have absolutely nothing to do with this,’’ said a spokesperson of A V Birla group. Kumar Mangalam Birla even did not attend the meeting at Birla Park in Kolkata on Monday where the will was read out.
