The action in the ongoing Wills Masters on the Wills Sport Golf Tour shifted from the sunlit surroundings of the Classic Golf Resort to under the strobe lights of Fireball, the most happening disco in the capital on Friday night.The event, organised as part of the package, was a perfect way to drive home the message to the younger generation that the future belongs to golf.

It was heartening to see the turn-out and even more satisfying to see the crowd enjoy a host of games based on golf like scooping the ball into a basket and breaking pots with their chips from a distance, apart from putting through a hoop. Call it `Adventure Golf’ or `Trick Golf’, it was fun.

What was really amazing was that the women folk present showing keen interest. Hopefully they will carry their interest further. For golf is not just a career option for men nowadays. One just needs to look at the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour in the US. There is a total prize money of almost $ 30 million and somebody like Se RePak, the rookie pro from South Korea, stands to make more than a million dollars in a season.

Our very own Simi Mehra has shown the way by becoming the first Indian woman to qualify for this top grade tour and recently, she finished among the top 10. Also present was the Channel V team, led by the ravishing Suchitra Pillai. The on-course action is to be shown on Star Sports, while the off-course happenings will be on Channel V.

This is indeed in total contrast to the days when even the Indian Open was dismissed in a few paragraphs in many newspapers. And now the difference is that all major papers are covering major events extensively. The evidence has been the last few days and golf can only grow from strength to strength with this kind of backing.
