PUNE, JANUARY 12: After a rather slow start to the 47th Senior Boxing Championship finals where two bouts were ruled RSC (Referee Stops Contest), local lad Mangesh Kamble and P Bipin delighted the packed stands with a flurry of punches.
But the end result in the bantamweight did not please the crowd as Kamble of the Central Industrial Security Force went down to Bipin 14-23.
Bipin cheered by the Asian gold medal winner Dingko Singh excelled with his right-left punches. Kamble, at the receiving end in the first round, made a comeback in the second, capitalising on Bipin’s lapses and sending his rival for a stand count much to the delight of the crowd.
But there was something special coming up. In the third round, Bipin struck in a big way and Kamble ran for cover. It was obvious that Kamble had run out of ideas to take on a much superior rival.
Surprisingly, the judges and referee continued with the bout and Bipin with his mission. Kamble withstood the onslaught till the end of the fourth round. At the bell, Bipin raised his hands in triumph.
The Railways, never in the race for the general championship which they shared with the Services last year in Simla, got off to a rousing start by winning the light flyweight and lightweight titles.
