After breaking the world record for the largest drum ensemble last year, the Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF) is aiming to set another record by organising the biggest ever guitar ensemble on Friday. The event is part of the Shillong Autumn Festival, 2007 and will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here. MTDF vice-chairman Larsing Ming said that the organisers expect to attract over 2,000 guitarists from across the country and even abroad.

A special cash prize of Rs 20,000 will be given to the largest contingent of minimum 100 guitarists.

Ming said though it is very difficult to rope in such a large number of guitarists at one place at the same time, the MTDF is optimistic as the Northeast has a big pool of musicians. The MTDF has sent invitation to all celebrity guitarists willing to hog the limelight on the mega occasion. The guitarists will play Bob Dylan’s Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.

The present world record for the biggest-ever guitar ensemble stands at 1,721 guitarists from Kansas City in the USA, where Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water was performed on June 4, 2007. A Guitar Fair in London, which will be held on November 2, will also attempt to topple the same record.
