In what can be described as an anti-climax to his generous gesture to the poor farmers of Maval taluka in Pune district, Amitabh Bachchan on Monday submitted a letter through his lawyer withdrawing his “donation of land” to the Maval farmers.

“I myself as a karta and on behalf of my son Abhishek request you to kindly treat the matter closed,” Bachchan says in the letter.

The letter, addressed to Pune Divisional Commissioner Nitin Kareer and handed over to the SDO, says, “We realise that our action and interaction to surrender the land in favour of the erstwhile farmers were based on utterly wrong premises, we therefore unconditionally withdraw our said letter send dated July 19, 2007.”

This letter came in response to Sub Divisional Officer Sanjaysinh Chavan, having written to Bachchan on March 3 to be either present himself or for his lawyer to be present so as to update him about the Allahabad High Court order about the Barabanki land deal.

In his letter, Bachchan expressed hope that by withdrawing his earlier letter addressed to divisional commissioner of Pune Nitin Kareer last year, of desiring to donate the agricultural land, all controversies will be laid to rest.

The lawyer, who represented Bachchan, was here following SDO Chavan’s letter to seek the necessary clarifications regarding his farmer status and the land in Maval.

According to Chavan, the case does not end as now its legal aspects will have to be checked.

He had written the letter in the wake of the controversy over the possession of land in Barabanki by the actor was raised again. The Uttar Pradesh government has recently moved the Supreme Court alleging glaring irregularity in the revenue records. The state Government has challenged the Allahabad High Court order, which gave a clean chit to Bachchan in the Barabanki land deal.

Chavan had earlier sent a letter to the Additional Collector, Barabanki, requesting him to send the orders, but there was no reply.
