MUMBAI, OCT 2: The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) of the Mumbai police arrested two persons last night, including a senior New Delhi-based official of Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) on charges of bribing a police officer investigating a ragging case at Grant Medical College.According to Police Inspector R R Joshi, who is investigating the ragging case at Grant Medical College attached to J J Hospital, middleman Subash Bakshi was arrested around 9.15 pm last night when he was counting the bribe of Rs 2 lakh concealed in a white plastic bag. His confession led to the arrest of Atulkumar Rohtagi, father of one of the medical students involved in the ragging case, Joshi added.Rohtagi's son is among the seven second year MBBS students who were involved in a ragging case. They have been indicted after preliminary investigations carried out by Dr A C Mohanty, Dean of Grant Medical College.The incident dates back to August 19, 1999, when the seven senior students herded two first year MBBS students toone of their rooms and made them perform some obscene and mock-homosexual acts. After a preliminary inquiry into the incident, college authorities then informed the J J Marg police last Wednesday, who are now conducting a full-scale inquiry.On hearing the news of his son's involvement in the case, Rohtagi (50), a Deputy General Manager at BHEL in Delhi, came to Mumbai to settle the matter. He first approached Senior Inspector Tanaji Ghadge, offering him Rs 2 lakhs to dispose the case against his son.Meanwhile, Bakshi, a clearing agent who has been approaching investigation officer R R Joshi for the past five days, said that the seven students were willing to pay Rs 2 lakh each for disposing the case. He said that he would pay Rs 2 lakh as the first instalment on behalf of a student, Inspector Joshi told The Indian Express.Ghadge contacted the ACB who laid a trap. On Friday night, Bakshi came on Rohtagi's behalf to deliver the money and was arrested by the bureau. The team then went to thestudents' hostel where Rohtagi was waiting for Bakshi and arrested him. He has been charged with trying to bribe a police officer.Ghadge told The Indian Express,``We have taken permission from the magistrate to conduct the inquiry. Some more arrests are likely to be made soon very soon.''
