NEW DELHI, May 24: Winners for the past three years, Food Corporation of India (NZ) had none of that weekend lethargy that plagued opponents Oriental Bank of Commerce as they fixed a semi-final berth in the DSA Institutinal league at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Sunday.
A fired up FCI side, combining impressively, set the tone of things to come right at the start and went on to dominate the entire session.
Sanjeev Bhalla, a striker with Youngmen Club, cashing in on a momentary confusion in the Oriental Bank defence, swung the first one for FCI with a neat half volley in the fifth minute.
While Oriental struggled to regroup, FCI’s Trilok Bisht, Gurmeet, Mobin and and Bhupinder Rawat carved out numerous openings which they missed narrowly.
In the second half, Neeraj cut through the defence on the left flank and passed to Bisht who was unlucky yet again.
Finally, Bhupinder Rawat’s solo effort from the left flank found the net with considerable help, though unintentional, from OBC goalkeeper Prashanta Bimal to make it 2-0.
In the dying minutes, Oriental managed to avoid a whitewash when Vivek Sharma converted a penalty kick to make the final scoreline 1-2.
