MOGA, Sept 28: Nearly 20,000 students and youth from various parts of the state celebrated the 92nd birth anniversary of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh here today.
They pledged to fulfil his dream to fight the menace of unemployment and casteism, and demanded free education for all and upliftment of the down-trodden.
The pledge was taken at a rally organised as part of a cultural programme marking the birthday of Bhagat Singh. Jointly convened by the All India Youth federation (AIYF) and the All India Students Federation (AISF), the event was attended by youths and students from schools, college and universities of the state.
Prithipal Singh and Kashmir Singh, respective general secretaries of AIYF and AISF owing allegiance to the Communist Party of India, claimed that both the organisations had collected eleven lakh signatures of students during their campaign launched on Republic Day. The signed papers, along with a memorandum asking for better youth care would be submitted to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal next week, they added.
The main demands were providing employment to youths and granting unemployment allowance of Rs 1600 per month. Other requests include compulsory education up to senior secondary level, bringing down the ratio of teachers and pupil to 1:22 in schools, subsidy for higher education and setting up of bhawans in his memory the block level.
The rally was addressed among others by senior Communist leaders Satyapal Dang, former CPI MLA Vimla Dang, party state secretary Joginder Dayal.
