Teesta Setalvad, who has been accused by Best Bakery prime witness Zaheera Sheikh of pressuring her to make false statements in the case, today filed an application in the Supreme Court seeking a probe by the CBI into the circumstances which led to the witness’ about-turn.

In her application, Setalvad has asked the Court to investigate why Zaheera wanted to depose under police protection. Speaking to The Indian Express, Setalvad said: ‘‘What is the role of the police in the whole scene? We also appeal to the Court to investigate under what conditions Zaheera changed her statement.’’

The social activist who runs an NGO, Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), refused to comment further, saying the matter was ‘‘sub-judice’’.

Zaheera had on November 3 accused the NGO and Setalvad in particular of pressuring her into making flase statements. She had also sought police protection during the ongoing retrial in the special court in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, the special court conducting the retrial of the case today extended to November 17 its summons issued to Zaheera and her two brothers, Nafitullah Sheikh and Nasibulla Sheikh, and asked them to remain present before it by then. The prosecutors have said they can ask for warrants against the three witnesses if they fail to appear on November 17.
