Faced with criticism over acquiring agricultural land for industry, the West Bengal government has turned its eyes on unused military airfields of the World War-II era for industrial projects.
‘‘There is a proposal for acquisition of such airfields. The Home Secretary has sought detailed reports from all district magistrates on their present status,’’ Special Secretary to the CM Dipankar Mukherjee said today. Sources said CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee recently spoke to Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee about the acquisition of the airfields and the latter agreed to the proposal. Details of the airfields, including encroachments if any, would have to the sent to the Ministry of Defence once the state government received the reports, the sources said, adding that there were nearly 17 such airfields in the state.
