SINGAPORE: Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said on Sunday the US should act cautiously amid a political firestorm triggered by Taiwan's President Lee Teng-hui. Tang said he had told Secretary of State Madeleine Albright that ``the US should say little and act with great caution'' on the Taiwan issue. US envoy Richard Bush, meanwhile, assured Taipei today that Washington would honour its commitments to the island and called for a peaceful settlement of disputes with China. ``All the elements of the administration's policy towards Taiwan remain in place,'' Bush said. ``The United States remains committed to faithful implementation of the Taiwan Relations Act,'' he said. The act has governed the unofficial ties between the US and Taiwan since Washington switched diplomatic recognition to Beijing in 1979. It stipulates the US will provide weapons but does not oblige it to defend Taiwan against attack something China has threatened if Taiwan declares independence.
