NEW DELHI, August 19: A beggar who was arrested on charges of murder on Wednesday fled the police remand home a few hours later. Four caretakers of the remand home and a constable have been suspended for negligence on duty.

Jai Kumar (24) had been accused of killing another beggar at Mukherjee Nagar early this morning. The body of Manoj Kumar (30), a resident of Agra, had been picked up from the railway station in January this year. He was supposed to live at a beggar house at Mukherjee Nagar for a year.

The deceased reportedly complained of a stomach ache on Tuesday night following which he was rushed to a local hospital. Soon after he was brought back to the beggar house after treatment, he reportedly picked up a fight with Jai Kumar. Jai allegedly broke the window pane with an iron rod and stabbed Manoj with the broken glass. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries due to excessive bleeding.

A case of murder was registered at Mukherjee Nagar police station. Manoj was absconding but was caught by a police control room staff around 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday. He confessed to his crime. Jai was taken to the police remand home but escaped a few hours later. The remand home caretakers, Prithvi Nath, Lal Bahadur, Thanraj, Biragilal and constable N.S. Jharod have been suspended.
