The Bharuch police claimed to have cracked a rape case by arresting one Rajesh Vasava (32) on Thursday. The police said Vasava has confessed to have raped a five-year-old girl at Piraman village in Ankleshwar taluka on October 14.
Vasava was arrested on the basis of a sketch made by a primary school teacher, Vipul Patel, as per the details of the accused given by the villagers.
During investigations, the police found that some villagers had noticed an unidentified person hiding in one Yusufbhai’s field soon after the incident had taken place.
“One Firoz, who works in Yusufbhai’s sugarcane field, found something suspicious about a person who was dark in complexion and heavily built. The person, who was in an inebriated state, told him that he was from Umarvada and works as a labourer in this area,” said Inspector A D Srivastav of Ankleshwar GIDC .
Firoz’s testimony proved helpful in the investigation and served as a reference material for drawing the sketch. “There were no experts available and for investigation, it was important for the police to get a sketch of the person who appeared as the culprit,” Srivastav said. Firoz told the police that the accused had long hair and was wearing a golden bracelet. The police circulated the sketch at every public place and even sent it to the Umarvada police. “Even barbers and the vendors who sell bracelets in Umarvada were approached by the police,” Srivastav said.
He added: “On Thursday, we got a call from a head constable of Umarvada that a person similar to that in the sketch was seen in the area. When he was inquired, he admitted to his crime and took the police to the location where he had raped the girl.”
The accused had lured the girl with biscuits. Incidentally, her father died in the first week of this month and her mother eloped with another man. The child lives with her grandparents.
