A day after Foreign Minister Natwar Singh and his Bangladeshi counterpart Morshed Khan vowed to put the past behind, the BSF is hoping Dhaka does more than it has been doing to flush out militant outfits operating from its territory.
BSF Inspector General S.C. Srivastava said Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) had been provided with a list of 210 North-East based militant camps operating from within Bangladesh in April. He hoped the BDR would initiate action to dismantle the camps as the Bhutan government did in flushing out NE-based militants such as the ULFA, NDFB and others.
Talking to The Indian Express on Wednesday, Srivastava said there had been no
response from the BDR on the list handed over to them. He revealed that the Bangladesh Rifles higher-ups had promised to verify the list of militant camps provided to them by their Indian counterpart. ‘‘Beyond that I don’t know whether the BDR has acted on the list,’’ he said. Srivastava said the list had also been forwarded to Union Home Ministry.
He said the ball was now in the Centre’s court to move against the presence of militant camps in Bangladesh. External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh had yesterday brought up the subject with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister M. Morshed Khan.
The presence of camps of NE-based militant outfits inside Bangladesh has been a serious concern to the north-eastern states and to security forces involved in counter- insurgency operations in the region. A few militants have also taken refuge in neighbouring Myanmar.
