After suffering two humiliating defeats in the Emerging Trophy tri-series tournament in Sri Lanka, Indian coach Lalchand Rajput is a worried man.
With totals of 137 and 100 in the two defeats against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, it is easy to say that the batting line-up, which consists mainly of India’s second string batsmen, has failed the big test.
And Rajput agrees to it. ‘‘The batsmen have not applied themselves. They are India’s upcoming stars and they have not utilised the opportunity to prove themselves,’’ says the dejected former India opener. As he spoke to The Indian Express, Rajput is seeking to find an answer to the puzzle that when tailenders like Dinesh Karthik and Laxmi Ratan Shukla could score, how come the the specialists have failed.
When persisted with the same question, he thinks for a while before saying, ‘‘Perhaps, they have yet to gauge the impact of playing the white ball, which does a bit more in the early overs than the red SG ball. They are just playing through the line instead of biding their time.’’
Asked specifically about the loss to Pakistan — chasing 138 for victory Indian were shot out for 100 — Rajput said that there was no pressure on his batsman. ‘‘The pressure was more on the Pakistanis since they were out for 137. We just committed too many mistakes.’’
The only positive from the tour so far has been the show of the bowlers. Rajput was all praises for the bowlers, ‘‘Irfan, Salvi and Balaji make for a good bowling attack.”
