After a political career spanning more than half-a-century, veteran Left leader and former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu has decided to call it a day. Saying age is catching up with him, he has made up his mind to retire from the CPI(M)’s Politburo as well the party’s central committee.

In a letter to the CPI(M)’s highest policy-making body, Basu has requested the party to allow him to relieve him of his duties as a member of the Politburo.

‘‘Age is now preventing me from carrying out the responsibilities of a Politburo member. So on Tuesday, when the Politburo meets, I will definitely ask them to accept my resignation from the august body. However, I will continue to work for the party in West Bengal,’’ he said. ‘‘I have a serious stomach ailment. I need rest, and I cannot travel anymore. I have already sent the letter, and I hope they accept it,’’ he added.

The former CM said he would press for permission to quit when he attends the party congress scheduled for April 6 in Delhi.

Basu, in his 90s, rubbished suggestions the party would not release him. ‘‘The question does not arise at all. I think everyone should realise that you cannot fight age.’’

The Politburo had, in the past, refused to accept Basu’s plea when he wanted to quit as West Bengal CM. They had then appointed Buddhadeb Bhattacharya as his deputy to lessen his workload. Now, however, the situation is quite different. Basu, the oldest living member of the Politburo, dislikes travelling these days and has admitted he cannot sit in a particular position continuously. But even then, there are doubts if the party will release him from the Politburo.

CPI(M) secretary and Politburo member Anil Biswas said: ‘‘Jyoti Basu may not want to continue as Politburo member. But the party needs him and his guidance.’’ However, even if the party accepts Basu’s plea to release him of his responsibilities as a Politburo member, he will continue to enjoy membership status till death.

Over two decades ago, the Politburo had decided to honour founder members with life membership, a privilege that E.M.S. Namboodiripad enjoyed.
