The Left doesn’t believe in being a watchdog, it wants to play a direct role in the day-to-day governance of the country, literally. Former West Bengal chief minister and veteran leader Jyoti Basu today called for a committee for day-to-day coordination between the Left and parties that form the UPA Government.
‘‘The CMP has many nice words but we want to know how it is being implemented so that it does not remain nice words. We want to know what the government is doing on a day-to-day basis. What are their budget proposals? What specific steps are they taking to implement the CMP?’’ Basu said.
Basu was speaking at a condolence meeting on the death of former Kerala chief minister and Politburo member E.K. Nayanar and two state leaders, Ram Sumer Yadav and Gobinda Kundu.
Basu said there has to be committee to maintain day-to-day coordination between the Left and the parties that form the UPA government. ‘‘I have told Prakash (Karat) to initiate discussions to form such a committee. This is necessary to keep the alliance alive.’’
The veteran leader, however, assured that the Marxists would not make any ‘‘impractical’’ demands. ‘‘We are not going to make any demand on the Centre which is impractical. We know their limitations. We won’t do this because we do not want to have BJP here again. “
Karat said the Left would not compromise on vital issues. ‘‘We want the removal of all those people with communal ideology who had been planted in several institutes and other concerns of the government by the BJP Government.”
On economic policies, Karat said: “We don’t expect the Manmohan Singh Government to undo everything the previous Vajpayee Government had done. But we will be uncompromising on some basic things: We won’t allow privatisation of any profit-making PSUs. We want some basic policies to be framed that will benefit the common people. We will also see to it our foreign policy does not remain pro-US but there is multi-polarity.’’
