With his allegations on the phone tapping issue pitching him against the top UPA leadership, Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh was advised by CPI general secretary A B Bardhan to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi and have the matter sorted out, sources said today. The SP leader, who says he is a victim of a political conspiracy, has been meeting Left leaders looking for their support. He had earlier met CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat, who said the phone tapping of Singh was a serious matter. But Karat also said the phone tapping controversy raised questions of accountability of private telecom players.Following his meeting with Bardhan on Wednesday, and earlier in the day with Forward Bloc’s Debabrata Biswas, it was suggested that Singh was expecting the Left to intercede on his behalf with the UPA leadership for an inquiry into the phone tapping. During his meeting with Bardhan, Singh gave a detailed account of his side of the story and how details of party functioning could go into the wrong hands following the phone tapping episode.Apart from advising him to meet Sonia, Bardhan told the SP leader that a CBI inquiry would be a more effective way to get to the bottom of the controversy and identify those actually behind it.
