Taking lessons from the death of Sergeant Bapi Sen on Monday following an attack by eve-teasing constables early on January 1, West Bengal police top brass today warned its forces against leaving their barracks without permission.

‘‘Armed forces require prior permission to leave their barracks. Earlier also, we have warned our forces against leaving their barracks without permission. We have issued the warning once again after the Sergeant’s death,’’ Deputy Inspector-General of Police (HQ) Narayan Ghosh said here today.

Pointing out that the Bengal Police Regulation Code provides for harsh punishments for erring personnel, Ghosh said superiors were monitoring the ranks’ compliance with the rules.

According to Ghosh, 10 to 15 state police personnel are dismissed annually for indiscipline, while more than a thousand face departmental proceedings every year. Steps like imposition of fines and freezing of promotions were also taken, when necessary.

Following Bapi Sen’s death, the Kolkata police today issued an appeal urging the woman involved in the incident to come forward and help the police prosecute the culprits. The Kolkata Police Commissioner Sujoy Chakrabarthy issued the appeal saying: ‘‘We appeal to you to come forward and co-operate with the police so that the case becomes stronger. We assure that if you want the police will not disclose your identity.”

Meanwhile, artistes of the police have drawn a sketch of the woman after getting her description from eye-witnesses.
