MUMBAI, September 2: Five hardcore criminals were caught red-handed by a special squad of Mumbai police when they were planning to rob a bank at Vile Parle (east) on Tuesday afternoon.

Acting on a tip-off, officers of a special squad attached to zone-8 of the police laid a trap near Canara Bank, Green House, on Nehru Road. The squad had information that a gang was planning to loot a bank in the area.

At around 12 noon, six men were seen moving near the bank in a suspicious manner. The squad closed in on them and nabbed five members of the gang. One of the gang-members, however, managed to escape.

The members, after interrogation, have been identified as Suresh Pillai, Saji Kanak, Devdas Shetty, Joseph alias Joshi, Dara and Raju Devkar. The gangsters confessed they had plans to rob the bank.

A countrymade revolver with five live cartridges, a knife and two choppers have been recovered from the gangsters. They have been remanded to police custody till September 11.
