MUMBAI, SEPT 12: The Wada Zilla Prasthapana Samiti will observe a bandh on September 14 to press the long-pending demand to bifurcate Thane district into Urban Thane and Wada districts. A public meeting will also be held in Wada on that day to muster public support to the demand.

Samiti Chairperson Milan Patkar and Secretary Madhusudan Chaudhary addressed mediapersons regarding the relevance of Wada district. Patkar said the Sena-BJP government had endorsed the concept of separate districts for adivasis. Both cited the recent separation of Nandurbar adivasi belt from Dhule district.

Patkar emphasised the need to separate adivasi taluks like Wada, Jawhar, Mokhada, Shahpur and parts of Palghar, Bhiwandi and Murbad from the urban and industrialised parts of Thane district. “The new district could be headquartered at Wada, with separate government machinery to look into the backward adivasi settlements, which are currently unattended,” Patkar said.

Posters and pamphlets have already been circulated by theSamiti all over the district in to accelerate public debate on the issue. The Samiti also opposed the earlier government’s Pingulkar Committee recommendations – which suggested Palghar as the new headquarter of the proposed district.
