The bandh called by the BJP in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts today to protest the December 6 communal violence in the Old City, evoked only a partial response, even as the party claimed that ‘‘jehadi’’ forces were behind the violent incidents.
While schools and some government offices remained closed, a majority of hotels, nationalised and private banks, shops and other business establishments did moderate business. State-owned transport corporation buses plied as usual, even as private buses and autorickshaws remained off the road.
At least a dozen BJP state leaders were arrested by the police in the city and Ranga Reddy district for attempting to force shopkeepers to down their shutters.
BJP state vice-president S.V. Seshagiri Rao alleged that ‘‘jehadi’’ forces had instigated the violence, which was ‘‘supported by the various Majlis parties in the state.’’
Home Minister T. Devender Goud reviewed the situation in the trouble-torn area, along with city Police Commissioner R.P. Singh and other senior officials.
A decision on relaxing the curfew in eight
police station limits in the Old City seemed unlikely as tension surfaced in the area with dusk falling.
