NEW DELHI, Aug 1: The Rajya Sabha today condemned what it called derogatory remarks against Dalit leader B R Ambedkar in Arun Shourie’s recent book and demanded its immediate ban.

The issue was raised by Congress members Ajit Jogi during zero hour and the entire House immediately shared his anguish.

Jogi referred to SC and ST Forum burning a copy of the book False God this morning in front of Dr Ambedkar’s statue in Parliament compound.

The Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Jayanthi Natarajan, said she would convey feelings of the House to the Prime Minister, I K Gujral, and the Home Minister, Indrajit Gupta.

The Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson, Najma Heptulla, pointed out a film was being made on Dr Ambedkar for his invaluable contribution in framing the constitution.

The film was being made as part of celebrations of Dr Ambedkar’s centenary year.

For this purpose, she said she had made a one time exception to allow shooting of the film inside the Rajya Sabha chamber.Dr Ambedkar was never a member of the Lok Sabha. He was only a member of the Constituent Assembly and the Rajya Sabha.
