SRINAGAR, MAY 30: Union Textile Ministry has assured the representatives of shahtoos shawl weavers that their problems will be taken up with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and the Environment Ministry so that about 20,000 people connected with this craft are rehabiliated after considering all aspects of the ban imposed on sale of shahtoos shawls.
Addressing a meeting of representatives of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry, artisans and weavers here on Monday, Union Textile Minister Kashi Ram Rana said Centre is ready to provide a relief package to help revive handicraft, handloom and silk industries in the state.
The shahtoos dealers complained that `misunderstandings’ have been created that shahtoos is procured after killing the `cheeru’ and they are being harassed outside the country, resulting in hardships to the shawl vendors.
The minister said measures will be taken to promote manufacture and marketing of export-oriented handicrafts, particularly pashmina shawls and carpets as this is imperative to revive state’s economy.
He said constant efforts would be made to provide raw material to the artisans at reasonable prices.
Rana said Central Silk Board is considering setting up of an integrated silk upgradation and modernisation project at a cost of Rs 5 crore in the state.
