Riding on brisk festival sales, two-wheeler major Bajaj Auto reported a 53.28 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 280 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2005, compared to Rs 182.01 crore for the same quarter last fiscal.
Total income increased 24.50 per cent to Rs 2,107.32 crore for the quarter. The company registered the highest-ever sale of motorcycles in October — 205,012 — and the premium segment Pulsar twins crossed cumulative sales of a million in November.
According to Sanjiv Bajaj, executive director, Bajaj Auto, ‘‘Motorcycle sales for the nine months continued to outgrow the industry, registering a 30.9 per cent growth compared to the industry growth of 18.8 per cent.’’ The motorcycle capacity is being expanded to 250,000 per month by March 2006 to meet growing demand, he said.
Bajaj Auto’s market share of motorcycles has gone up to 30.2 per cent from 27.8 per cent in 2004-05.
Outperforming industry numbers, Bajaj Auto’s rising motorcycle sales continues to propel growth in the company’s topline while change in product mix in favour of motorcycles in the premium and value segment improved profitability.
During the quarter, the Bajaj CT 100 upgrade sold over 2,70,000 units while 101,000 units of Pulsar was recorded. The cruiser bike, Avenger, sold 6,600 units and Discover sold over 1,26,000 bikes in the quarter.
