WANGTU , June 12: An Army engineer unit is set to enter the record books by constructing the country’s longest bailey bridge on river Sutlej near Wangtu in the upper regions of Himachal Pradesh. This is the second bridge of its kind in the country, the other being at Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir.
Apart from the engineer regiment, personnel of General Reserve Engineer Force, Public Works Department and Naptha-Jhakri Project Corporation are also involved in the construction of this 400 feet long bridge. The bridge is expected to become operational next month.
Maj M.J. Kumar, who was present on the site, said that a work force of about 200 along with heavy machinery has been pressed into service.
Another officer, Capt Anand Shukla said that though back space available is extremely less, making working conditions difficult.
