Ahead of india’s match against Pakistan in a World Cup tomorrow when everybody has taken sides, ‘bahus’ from Pakistan are in a fix — whom to support.

‘‘If you ask me, I do not want India to play any cricket match with Pakistan… It is full of tension and regardless of the result it leaves me saddened after every match,’’ says Salma, a Pakistani who got married to a Lucknow-based teacher in 1986.

There are thousands of Muslim families in Lucknow who have relatives, including blood relations, in Pakistan. Around 200 of such families have their daughter-in-laws from Pakistan.

Pervez, a journalist by profession, said that tomorrowh is family members will have a friendly fight with his ‘bhabhi’, who is from Karachi.

‘‘There is bound to be an exchange of banters. She loves India but will yearn for Wasim and Waqar while the whole family will cheer every run scored by Sachin and Sehwag.’’ However, this is not so easy in every family.

Zubeida, from Mianwali in Pakistan was married to Afroz, a businessman, in 1982. She was burnt alive by her-in-laws reportedly after India lost a cricket match in Sharjah. Zubeida had chided her husband for supporting India, according to Rafiq Kazi, a retired teacher.

Still different is the case of Sadia Momin, who worked with Habib Bank in Pakistan. Despite opposition from her family, she married Rakesh Tomar, a senior manager with an international bank in Hong Kong and set up a home here.
