Margao, Feb 13: Mohun Bagan coach P K Banerjee does not care for the intriguing permutation and combinations between victories, defeats and draws among four teams in the race for three Super Six berths, from Group A, in the Coca-Cola National Football League (NFL), which heads for the climatic conclusion tomorrow.

Especially since the defending champions from Calcutta play Goan side Dempo S.C, who are out of the reckoning and are likely to attempt to regain lost prestige at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, here.

Banerjee, looking ahead to a tough proposition, said: “We are playing to survive in the competition. They (Dempo) will be playing to salvage some pride, having nothing more to come.

Mohun Bagan’s resolve to go gung-ho for three points tomorrow will take quite an effort, star striker Chima Okerie, whose superlative scissor-kick, against Churchill from 25-yards very nearly conjured up the best goal in all three NFL’s so far, is in pain. The Nigerian struggled during training this morning. According toBanerjee, Chima is just 25 per cent fit despite two injections to ease a painful hamstring muscle. Churchill’s Iraqi mid-fielder Bassim Yohann, will sit out owing to a red card, while defender Satyabrata Bhomwick has collected two yellows and will also join Bassim from the stands. Banerjee has already resigned himself to the absence of star striker IM Vijayan, who is nursing a swollen leg, for the rest of the competition should Bagan make the next phase.

The Calcutta side, however, drew cheer from the likely return from injury of two top mid-fielders – Khenthang Paite and Amit Das, Paite’s ankle-injury kept him out, while Das did not last the distance in the last match against Churchill Brothers which ended 2-2.

Churchill look for win

MUMBAI: Churchill Brothers of Goa will be hoping that all’s well that’s ends well. They face Air-India of Mumbai in the last tie of the Group A.Churchill have 14 points from nine games and if they beat Air-India tomorrow, they end up with a great chance ofqualifying for the Super Six. Churchill are on par with Mohun Bagan but their danger comes from Tollygunge Agragami who are facing the formidable JCT, the leaders with 16 points, in their final match. Mercifully for Churchill, Air-India have managed only four points and even a win for the Mumbai team will not revive their position.

Agragami hope for miracle

CALCUTTA: Tollygunge Agragami have no option but to pull of a victory when they lock horns with JCT in their last Group A league match. The home team would be hoping to capitalise on home conditions in the last match to keep their hopes alive in the high-profile league.

The new-look jct team were sitting pretty and would not be under much pressure having virtually assured a place in the super six stage of the championship.
