The Supreme Court today directed the special judge in Ropar to decide tomorrow the bail application of former Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh.

The two are in judicial custody on charges of amassing Rs 78 crore of assets disproportionate to their known sources of income.

A bench comprising Justice N. Santosh Hegde and Justice P.B. Singh posted the hearing of the petition filed by Badal and his son seeking bail and transfer of the case outside state for Friday. In Patiala, Badal’s ‘‘birthday rally’’ began at Gurdwara Dukhnivaran Sahib with the announcement of a statewide agitation by SGPC president Gurcharan Singh Tohra.

Addressing a gathering, Tohra launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh saying ‘‘he has forced us to adopt the path of agitation by arresting our leader in a fabricated case and later restricting us from meeting him and his son Sukhbir in Patiala Central Jail’’. He said the policies of Capt Amarinder singh and his party were ‘‘suicidal’’ and the people would ‘‘teach them a lesson’’ in the LS elections next year.
