ON DEATH ROW: Veerappan’s associates Simon, Gnanprakasham, Meesekar Madaiah and Bilvendran, who were convicted for triggering a mine blast in 1993 in which 21 policemen were killed

Jameel Ahmed, a political science lecturer at the Mysore University and brother of Sub-Inspector Shakeel Ahmed, who was killed in another blast triggered by the accused, speaks to The Indian Express:

The Veerappan gang members do not deserve any sympathy. It would be a travesty of justice and serious threat to civil society. By letting them off the hook, the state will be encouraging terrorism. These people are guilty of killing state officials. The death sentence should be carried out at all costs.

The Supreme Court had stated that it would be a mockery of justice if the penalty for their crimes is not the death sentence. I totally disagree with the President’s reasoning. Hundreds of people who have testified against these people will be in danger. It would be a bad precedent. The President is not aware of the ground realities regarding criminals. It is only the most hardened criminals who are given the death sentence. I have spoken to many of the families of the victims of Veerappan’s gang and we all feel the same. Even though these associates of Veerappan were sentenced to death only n the Palar blast case of 1993, they were involved in several other cases, including the Meenyam blast of 1992 in which my brother was killed.’’
