MUMBAI, November 20: A new-born boy was crushed to death when his mother flung him down from the third floor of Asthavinayak Sadan at Kishan Nagar, Thane, on the morning of November 13. His unwed mother Sangeeta (name changed) has been arrested by the police. Senior police inspector of Wagle Estate police station, Rao Sahib Pote said the boy was rushed to the Thane civil hospital, but soon succumbed to his injuries. Sangeeta is currently in police custody, and a case has been registered against her under Sections 307 and 317 of the Indian Penal Code. A police officer, requesting anonymity, said Sangeeta’s physical relationship with a friend resulted in her getting pregnant, but when he refused to marry her, she chose not to have an abortion. “Instead, she committed this heinous crime,” he said. In another incident, a two-day-old girl was found lying in a garbage bin at Hajuri on Tuesday. She has been sent to the Bhivandi remand home.
Sub-inspector C N Pawar said the police were informed by locals that a baby girl was lying in the midst of garbage. “Our constable picked her up and took her to the Civil Hospital, Thane, where she was treated. Next day, the chief judicial magistrate at Thane ordered that she should be sent to the Bhivandi remand home,” Pawar said. He informed that the police have interrogated several women in the Wagle Estate area to find out the identity of the girl’s mother, and that they would soon succeed in their efforts. “If anybody wants to adopt the girl, they can approach the Bhivandi remand home,” he added.
Pote said both the cases were the result of illegitimate relationships, which are increasingly on the rise.
