Bikaner, April 26: Atanu Lahiri of India annexed the title in the 6th Commonwealth Chess Championship here when he defeated International Master Varghese Koshy to log eight points after the tenth and final round today. However, the winner of the tournament was overnight leader Alexander Baburin of Ireland who finished with 8.5 points after drawing his final clash with IM P Konguvel. The Irish could not claim the crown as he was representing a country not belonging to the Commonwealth family and thus had to be content with the winner's purse of US$ 2,500.Lahiri, who scored a stunning victory over GM Dibyendu Barua yesterday, brought about this unexpected turnabout in fortunes with a bold move against compatriot Koshy. He spurned a draw offer from the latter and played a risky line of the Modern Defence that saw him return triumphant in just 38 moves. The victory made Lahiri richer by 1,500 dollars. The clash of titans - Barua and GM Pravin Thipsay - in the nail-biting last round game ended in a draw. In a five-way tie for third to seventh place, Barua was declared third followed by Thipsay, IM K Murugan, SR Kidambi and Sandipan Chanda in that order.IM title for Deshmukh: Chanda, after initial setbacks in the tournament, played superbly to beat Sriram Jha in a Sicilian Dragon game with white pieces. He also achieved his maiden IM norm.IWM Bhagyashree Thipsay emerged the best woman player and fetched her second WGM norm when she drew her final round game against Pakistan's IM Mahmood Lodhi.Anup Deshmukh became an International Master by making his second and final norm with an easy victory over his LIC teammate Dinesh Kumar Sharma.Final standings: 1 A Baburin (Ireland) 8.5; 2 Atanu Lahiri (India) 8; 3 D Barua (India) 7; 4 PM Thipsay (India) 7; 5 K Murugan (India) 7; 6 SR Kidambi (India) 7; 7 Sandipan Chanda (India) 7;Women: 1 Bhagyashree Thipsay (6.5); 2 Swati Ghate (5.5); 3 Koneru Humpy (5.5).Junior (U-18): P Harikrishna (5.5); U-16: SS Ganguly (5.5); U-12: Abhijit Gupta (4.5); U-12: Tanya Sachdev 4.
