Azharuddin sets sights on domestic circuit

Azharuddin stated he had made the right decision to opt out of the forthcoming Sri Lanka and Singapore tournaments. “I am still not able to throw properly. There is no point playing with a sore shoulder. In fact, the doctor who performed the operation in England too agreed that I needed some rest before getting back into the game.”

Hewill hopefully play in the Moin-ud-Dowlah cricket tournament here in the first week of September. “I want to play as many domestic matches as possible.” On Kapil Dev’s comments seeking his retirement, Azharuddin said, “These things are best to be left alone. I do not want to create any controversy. There is something about me everyday.”

The former skipper was careful commenting on the Sahara Cup controversy, whether Kapil Dev was right in asking India to boycott the tournament. “Opinions do not really matter. We have to be honest. But we have to respect the government’s decision and the Board will accept their decision.” Unlike the past, Azharuddin was not harsh on the media. “I have no comments.” He once again stressed there was never any pressure for him as captain. “Of course, public expectations are always high. But we can’t keep winning all the time. There is pressure to perform. There are times when you not do well. I am not offering any excuses.”

Azharuddin said he will miss M L Jaisimhawho always helped him whenever he was short in confidence. In 1993, the late Jaisimha adjusted Azharuddin’s grip. The former Indian skipper went on to score a century against England at home.

“I’ll miss him. He was of great help. In fact, lot of cricketers benefited from his advice and I was one of the lucky cricketers. This great cricketer should be suitable honoured. I have a few plans in my mind.”

Azharuddin is planning to open an academy in the city. “I gave the proposal to the State government. Once the land is allotted, I’ll start the project. Hopefully, it will be better than the Australian Cricket Academy. I want do it in a big way.”
