MUMBAI, Aug 4: Sanjay Manjrekar, who guided the Mumbai team to its 33rd triumph in the Ranji Trophy National Championship of Cricket has been awarded the Mumbai Cricket Association's best senior player of the year (1996-97) award. The 19-year-old Mumbai opener Wasim Jaffer has been nominated for the Shantibhai Seth Trophy awarded to the best junior cricketer of the year. The 32-year-old Manjrekar became the third player to receive the Justice Tendolkar Trophy twice. He had earlier received the award in the 1986-87 season. Former Test wicket-keeper Chandrakant Pandit (1983-84 & 1990-91) and the left-handed batsman Vinod Kambli (1991-92 & 1992-93) are the only other players, whom Manjrekar emulated.Interestingly, the award instituted in the year 1963 for excellence in the game for Mumbai, has been bestowed upon Indian captain Sachin Tendulkar only in the 1995-96 season, almost ten seasons after the dashing batsman made an impact on the international stage.
