A preliminary postmortem report indicates that Bhagyashree Gulecha could have died after choking on food she regurgitated after falling unconscious due to physical stress.
According to the Ashoknagar police inquest report, the 10-year-old collapsed in her school field during a post-lunch physical training session on June 5. She was pronounced dead at a local nursing home. Her classmates say she collapsed after being forced to exercise by a teacher.
Over the past few days, forensic experts at Lady Curzon and Bowring Hospital have been trying to find out if physical stress alone was the reason or Bhagyashree had an undetected health problem.
‘‘To conclude cause of death, we need to match post mortem report, circumstances surrounding death, medical history and histopathological studies of key organs. Only postmortem report is now available,’’ says the hospital forensic expert.
The report has indicated the presence of food particles deep in her respiratory tract. ‘‘It has given rise to the theory choking on regurgitated food could have caused the death, but it is not conclusive,’’ says the forensic expert.
