MUMBAI, MAR 6: Auto companies are a worried lot. For the month of March, when the car sales usually shoot up riding on a year-end boom, the sales of passenger cars continued to remain flat. As analysts have forecast yet another year of recession, auto firms are looking at their small car models to prop up their sagging fortunes.

This scenario comes at a time when Maruti was able to sell around 27,786 cars in February this year, while Cielo sold about 942 cars.

Auto dealers say that the slowdown would continue for some more time as there are no signs of a revival in the economy. Most of the demand continued to be in the small car segment with Maruti selling over 15,745 cars in February. Its Esteem model sold around 1,170 cars but its competitors, Ford Escort and Opel Astra continued their pathetic showing with only 201 and 227 sales respectively. The auto makers, who were expecting a revival of demand in the second half of fiscal 1998, are now hoping that the next fiscal will bring some good news to them.
